UKCA Paphos Photography Club
Quarterly Competitions 2019
Rules & Information
1. Competitions will be held in the months of March (deadline for entries 6th March), June (deadline TBC), September (deadline TBC) and December (deadline TBC).
2. Each member may enter up to 3 (three) digital images per competition. Where 3 images are submitted a maximum of 2 should be on ‘Open’ topics while the 3rd must relate to the optional theme set for that competition. The theme for the 1st Quarterly will be “Portraiture” and the theme for the 2nd Quarterly will be “Monochrome”. Themes for Quarters 3 & 4 will be announced before the summer recess.
3. Images can be of any subject (within the bounds of good taste), taken at any location and may be toned, black and white or colour. Post-production work is permitted and encouraged but the images entered must be entirely the work of the photographer.
4. Entries should be submitted to the Competition Coordinator (Tom Brown) by e-mail attachment or on a memory stick no later than the Wednesday meeting 2 weeks before each competition. Any entries outside of this time frame can only be submitted with the prior consent of the Coordinator.
5. Digital images should be submitted in JPEG format at a resolution of 72 dpi and the file size should generally be no larger than 1.0 MB. The image size must not exceed 1400 pixels horizontal x 1050 pixels vertical (landscape) or 1050 pixels horizontal and 1400 pixels vertical (portrait). In the event of a ratio different to 4:3, the longest side of the image should not exceed 1400 pixels. If you are in any doubt about how to re-size your image(s) then please contact the Coordinator who will be pleased to assist you.
6. Each image submitted must have a Title. The title should not include the name of, or any reference to, the photographer.
7. In advance of each competition judging, members will be sent a PDF file containing a copy of all the images to enable them to view images on their own laptops or tablets in addition to viewing projected images on competition day.
8. On each competition day the images entered will be projected and critiqued by an expert judge from within the Photography Club. The identity of the photographers will be known only to the Competition Coordinator. However, it is generally accepted that internal judges can ascertain an image author from the metadata available with the image but this must not influence the judging process.
9. On competition days members can rate and score images based on the judge’s comments and their own personal preferences but only the judge’s score will count towards the accumulation of points for the purpose of ascertaining the winner over the 4 quarters.
10. Images will be marked out of 10 in 3 categories (the ‘TRS’ system) – A) Content & Impact, B) Composition, and C) Technical to give a total mark out of 30 points. Half marks are not permitted.
11. The highest scoring of the images submitted by each entrant will count towards the results of each competition and the accumulation of points. The top three images overall from each competition will be announced at the first Photography Club session following the competition. Full result sheets with the photographer's names will be sent out to members with the next bi-weekly e-mail. Winning images can be viewed in the PDF file sent out in advance of the competition.
12. The photographer attaining the highest accumulated judges’ scores from the images entered over all four competitions will be awarded a trophy to be held for one year. First, Second and Third certificates will be presented to the winner and the runners up. The presentations will normally take place at the Club’s Annual Photographic Exhibition awards night or such other time as determined by the Club.
13. Any queries relating to the Quarterly Competitions should be addressed to either the Competition Coordinator (Tom Brown) or the Photography Club Vice Chairman (Chris Scorer).
